Note to self: a game dev does not make a game designer.

...as I am coming to find working on my post-apocalyptic homesteading sim, Resprout. It's easy to lull yourself into thinking that being good at programming or being competent at asset production would make you a good game designer. It's an entirely different skillset. That should be obvious but when you've only been making small games, you think you're on top of the world and can do pretty much everything. After months of working on this game, that belief has basically been tarred, feathered, and cast to the depths of Oblivion. And maybe punched in the noggin too.
On the brighter side, game design is a whole new thing I can sink my teeth into and I'm slowly discovering my own creative "process". Perhaps the novelty will eventually wear off, just as it did for programming after many years, but hopefully that won't be the case for a looong time :-)
